November PUG

November 20, 2009 by adilfaford

Lori Jones has generously offered to host our November PUG and Holiday get together and she has some really fun things planned so tell everybody you know and let’s show Pictage that the Utah photogs know how to party.

Our topic this month in addition to food and party will be styling for photoshoots and Lori will talk a little bit about what she does and how she does it.  Lori helped with the styling in Julie Parker’s recent workshop and is excited to share with us.

If that is not exciting enough already Lori’s husband is going to make a child size kitchen play stove and Lori will accessorize it as a door prize for a food drive drawing.  Bring a can of non-perishable food and get a raffle ticket for each can you bring.

This will be a potluck dinner and Pictage will provide the main dish but if you want to bring a salad, drinks, chips, cookies, or other holiday treat to share that would be great.  No acohol please.

Don’t forget to RSVP.  See you on Nov. 30.

October PUG at IPPA

October 21, 2009 by adilfaford

Instead of meeting as a PUG group this month I want to invite everyone to the IPPA Annual Convention, Print Competition and Trade Show.

We have arranged a special discounted rate for all PUG members for the entire IPPA convention.  To register use this link to get the special 2 for $250 member rate and you’ll automatically be signed up as an IPPA member for the rest of the year.  Just use the online form to sign up for the convention and then at the registration desk fill out a 2009 member registration form and put my name Adilfa Ford as a sponsor.  Check out the IPPA website www.intermountainppa.com for more information on speakers, print competition, and trade show.  I promise, it’s a lot of fun and you you’ll come away with a lot of valuable education.

If you can’t make it to the whole convention stop by the Trade Show on Monday or Tuesday.   Find me or Russ at the trade show and sign the Pictage PUG sheet to win a $20 Applebees gift card.  We will be giving away two gift cards per day so if you are there both days make sure you get on the second list also.  There will be mini-seminars every half hour at the trade show so not only can you get some great deals from our vendors but education as well.  This is a great opportunity to take advantage of some of the best photographic and business education available without having to travel out of state or pay hundreds of dollars.  I hope to see you there.

September PUG at Don Polo

September 18, 2009 by adilfaford

Don’t miss this event!!!

I want to thank Jerry Hansen of Mar Del Photography who has agreed to be our presenter at this months PUG meeting.  Jerry is currently the president of the Intermountain Professional Photographers Association and a great friend.  Jerry is also a CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) from PPA and has earned his PPA Masters of Photography Award.  In order to earn a Masters of Photography you must enter regional or national print competition and have a minimum of 25 merits.  To earn print merits you must get a score of 80 or more.  With a regional print competition coming up right here in Utah in October Jerry is going to teach us how to select and prepare your prints for competition.  What makes a good competition print?  What are the rules of competition?  What do the judges look for most?

Bring some of your own prints and Jerry will critique them for you either in private or in the group and tell you how he thinks it would score and if and how it could be improved.  Please bring 8×10 or larger.

Nothing will improve your skills more than print competition.  Please RSVP and don’t forget to bring some prints.

PS.  Sorry about moving the day of the week all over but everybody has different days that are good and bad and Wednesday happened to be the day this month that fit best for Jerry’s schedule.

See http://www.mardelphotography.com to see samples of Jerry’s work.

June PUG at Don Polo

June 11, 2009 by adilfaford

We will be having the June PUG on Wednesday June 24 at 7:00 pm.  We’ll meet at my house/studio for some snacks and Pictage business and then we’ll talk shop.  Everything you ever wanted to know about lighting, both studio and environmental but didn’t know who to ask.  We’ll start in the studio with a basic one light on camera setup, talk about when and how to properly use an on camera flash, use of modifiers, reflectors and adding additional lights through your camera’s built in infrared.  Then we’ll add studio lights from a 1 to 5 light setup, how and why would you use so many lights.  If it stops raining by then well go outside for a bit and discuss how to find the best natural light and if not how to make your own.  How to use a fill flash outdoors and even how to shoot in bright sun if there is no shade.  Bring your cameras if you want to play.  Invite your friends and we’ll see you there.

May PUG meeting at Ryan Cummings

May 15, 2009 by adilfaford

PUG members and all Utah Professional Photographers,

Join us on Monday, May 18 at studio of Ryan Cummings Photography for an evening of fun, food, and friendship.  Ryan is a Brooks Institute of Photography graduate and also teaches photography at Salt Lake Community College in addition to being an excellent professional photographer himself.  We will meet at 7:00pm at Ryans studio in Midvale and he will give us the grand tour of his facilities and talk a little bit about how he does his magic.  Ryan also rents his studio to professional photographers who sometimes need a studio location but don’t want the overhead of paying for one all the time so if you’ve ever considered renting a studio check it out on Monday.  Our topic of the month will be outdoor lighting, how to use it, how to make it, and how to fake it.  Don’t miss this PUG event.  See you on Monday.

April PUG

April 21, 2009 by adilfaford

Thanks everybody for being patient with me.  Last month I was visiting family in Venezuela and then got really sick the day I was supposed to come home.  I had to stay an extra 2 weeks and as you can imagine I was going crazy.  It’s not much of a vacation when you have to stay inside the whole time.  Anyway, this months PUG is scheduled for April 28 at my studio in West Jordan.  I was thinking we could discuss the do and don’t of destination events.  I know there are quite a few a us doing out of town weddings and I think it would be interesting to learn from each other.  If anyone has other topics they would like to discuss let me know and we’ll add it to the agenda.  I hope to see everybody here.  Also plan on May 18 for next month, location and topic to be announced.

Great meeting at Studio One

February 26, 2009 by adilfaford

Sorry again for the late notice on the PUG meeting today.  It was a great meeting for those who could make it though and I think we all enjoyed Gary’s studio and presentation.  (Just make sure if Gary orders Pizza that you have a couple extra bottles of water).  Thanks Gary for the great info and for your time in hosting the PUG this month.  The studio is looking great and you do a wonderful job.  (Except now I’m really going to have to clean up my studio the next time I host.)
